It should first be said that the FDA has not approved any drugs or substances, including hand sanitizer, to prevent COVID-19. That being said, alcohol-based hand sanitizers can kill the SARS-CoV-2 virus that is responsible for COVID-19. According to the FDA and the CDC, it’s best to invest in a hand sanitizer that is at least 60% alcohol. Adding alcohol to a hand sanitizer that was made as a non-alcohol version has not been proven effective and is not recommended.
How Should I Clean My Hands?
The best way to clean your hands to prevent catching the coronavirus is by using plain soap and water. Wash with warm water for at least 20 seconds. You should be washing your hands frequently throughout the day, but especially before eating, after coughing or sneezing, and after using the restroom. There is no evidence supporting the idea that antibacterial soaps are more effective to prevent COVID-19 than plain soap.
If you’re out and about and can’t get somewhere to wash your hands with soap and water, hand sanitizer can be an acceptable alternative in a pinch. Just be sure that your sanitizer of course contains at least 60% alcohol. You might find it helpful to keep a supply of hand sanitizer in your car, purse, or backpack just in case you need it.
